Who can use it?

THERMOS is designed to drive low-carbon district energy planning and can be used by anyone tasked with local energy planning, a basic understanding of such, as well as an operating standard web-based browser.

Typically, THERMOS users and beneficiaries are:

• Local and regional government;
• DHC utilities;
• DHC and real estate project developers,
• Urban development departments and companies,
• Consulting and engineering firms,
• Research and academia,
• Energy agencies and ESCOs and Energy Managers
• Others (e.g. Energy Communities, Energy management offices)

Each of these user groups have been included in the development and testing of THERMOS to ensure the software meets real life energy planning needs and reaches the highest standard of user-friendliness and effectiveness.

What is needed to use it?

Access to a web browser (Chrome or Firefox preferably) with no specific processing power is sufficient.

THERMOS runs its optimisation analysis based on the available data. If no specific data is provided, THERMOS draws on OpenStreetMap and its demand estimation algorithms (from e.g. 2D building shape). If user specific data are being uploaded or provided (e.g. LIDAR layer, building height, building floor area, real demand values, etc.), the more accurate and user optimal the solution will be. 

THERMOS is used best with a moderate to sophisticated understanding of thermal networks. The tool is designed to allow for an intuitive use. A comprehensive training programme is freely available here to get familiar with THERMOS.
